The Virtual Lecture Series' are an initiative of Illustrative Mathematics to increase school and district exposure to national experts on a variety of PD topics.  The theme of the fall-winter 2014-2015 series is "Working with Number in the Elementary School Classroom."  The intended audience for this series is classroom teachers, mathematics coaches, district and state level math experts, or math teacher leaders that develop or facilitate professional development.

The format of Virtual Lecture Series is an hour long session each month.  Each session will feature a national expert as a guest speaker.  The speaker will present for approximately 40 minutes followed by 20 minutes of question and answer from participants.  A URL for the series using Adobe Connect will be emailed to registered participants prior to the first lecture.  You can attend the series live and have the opportunity of asking questions, or view the recording of the talk if you are unable to attend the specific time.  Recordings will only be available to registered participants.

This Virtual Lecture Series will meet at 7pm Eastern time on Thursdays and feature the following experts:  

  1. September 25, 2014  Linda Gojak, Immediate Past President, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Director, The Center for Mathematics Education, Teaching, and Technology, John Carroll University "Using Representations to Introduce Early Number and Fraction Concepts"

  2. October 23, 2014  Dona Apple, Mathematics Learning Community Project, Regional Science Resource Center, University of Massachusetts Medical School "Supporting students' conceptual understanding about number through reasoning, explaining and evidence in both their oral and written work"

  3. November 20, 2014 Brad Findell, The Ohio State University "Using unit fractions to make sense of fraction operations"

  4. December 11, 2014 Francis (Skip) Fennell, Professor of Education McDaniel College, Past President NCTM "Fractions Sense – It’s all about understanding fractions as numbers (and this includes those special fractions – decimals!)  – use of representations, equivalence, comparing/ordering and connections"
